What is an ultrasound scan?

Is an ultrasound painful or uncomfortable?
No, an ultrasound is generally painless. You may feel slight pressure from the transducer, but it should not cause discomfort.
How do I prepare for my ultrasound scan?
Preparation varies depending on the type of scan. For example, you may need to fast for abdominal scans or have a full bladder for pelvic ultrasounds. Specific instructions will be given prior to your appointment.
How long does an ultrasound scan take?
Most ultrasound scans take between 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the area being examined and the complexity of the scan.
When will I receive my results?
You will receive immediate verbal results with a written report often taking 24-48 hours to reach you. You can discuss any findings with our Consultant radiologist after the scan.
